You are making a mistake - the traders told us !
At Sarvaani Farm Products, we follow a simple rule: Our farmer-manufacturers either use their produce or buy from neighboring farmers first. But when supply gaps happen or seasons change, we have to step into the market.
That is where the real battle for quality begins.
We realized that for every crop, there is an Industry Standard way to cut corners in turn to save costs and we refused to follow that standard.
Here is what we are fighting against:
Groundnut is seasonal. When we approach traders in the off-season, they push us to buy seeds that yield the *most* oil to lower production costs.
They asked: "Why insist on top grades with high cost? Just mix in the lower grades. No one notices."
But we noticed. We prioritize the flavor and nutrient profile over the volume of oil extracted. We take the hit on yield to keep the quality high.
While Copra is available most of the year, supply gaps force us to Mandis. Here, the pressure is different.Traders pushed us to buy "Copra Pieces" instead of "Whole Copra." Why? Because pieces are cheaper. But pieces often hide "Koutu" (hidden fungal infections/rot) which ruins the oil. Worse, to make these pieces look premium and last longer, they are often polished with Sulphur. We refused. We stick to Whole Copra that is 100% Sulphur-free.
As we expand into South Indian Filter Coffee with our three partner farmers, we are learning the ground reality. In a candid chat, a manufacturer mentioned something sticking: "Most customers don't understand the intricacies of blending, so it's easy to compromise on the 80:20 ratio or bean quality."
We took that as a warning. That is why, even though we are outsourcing manufacturing in Year 1, we don't just send an order. We (or our farmers) stand at the facility and watch the production. We ensure the beans are top-tier and the blend is honest. Once the coffee market picks up, manufacturing to be transferred to the farmer.
Whether it is Oil or Coffee, if it carries the Sarvaani name, it has passed the hardest test of all: Our conscience.
